Great Central Railway

The UK's only double-track mainline heritage railway

Region: Midlands Type: Standard Gauge Era: Victorian

The Great Central Railway is the UK’s only preserved double-track main line steam railway, offering an authentic experience of travelling on a heritage railway through the Leicestershire countryside. Running between Loughborough and Leicester North, the railway provides a unique opportunity to see steam and heritage diesel locomotives passing each other, just as they would have done in the golden age of steam.

The railway features beautifully restored stations with period details, vintage rolling stock, and regular special events including dining trains, 1940s weekends, and Thomas the Tank Engine events. The GCR is committed to preserving Britain’s railway heritage while providing an unforgettable journey through history.
