Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways

The world's oldest independent railway through Snowdonia

Region: Wales Type: Narrow Gauge Era: Victorian

The Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways form the world’s oldest independent railway company and offer an unforgettable 40-mile journey through the heart of Snowdonia National Park. The combined route provides some of the most spectacular scenic railway journeys in Britain.

The Ffestiniog Railway, established in 1832, was originally built to carry slate from the mountains to the sea. Today, it carries passengers on a 13.5-mile journey from the harbour at Porthmadog to the slate quarrying town of Blaenau Ffestiniog. The Welsh Highland Railway extends the adventure with a 25-mile route from Caernarfon, passing the foot of Mount Snowdon, through Beddgelert and down to Porthmadog.

Together, these railways offer an extraordinary journey combining industrial heritage, Victorian engineering, and breathtaking mountain scenery.
