West Somerset Railway

Britain's longest heritage railway

Region: South Type: Standard Gauge Era: Victorian

The West Somerset Railway is Britain’s longest preserved heritage railway, running 20.5 miles along the beautiful Somerset coast from Minehead to Bishops Lydeard. The railway offers a spectacular journey combining coastal views, the Quantock Hills, and charming Somerset villages.

The line calls at 10 beautifully restored stations along its route, each with its own character and attractions. From the seaside resort of Minehead, through Dunster (with its medieval castle), Blue Anchor with its beach, Watchet harbour town, to the Quantock Hills at Bishops Lydeard, the journey offers constantly changing scenery.

Owned by Somerset County Council and operated by a preservation society, the WSR runs one of the most intensive heritage railway operations in Britain, with multiple daily services in peak season. The railway hosts numerous special events including steam galas, dining trains, and themed events throughout the year.
