Keith and Dufftown Railway

Scotland's Whisky Line

Region: Scotland Type: Standard Gauge Era: Victorian

The Keith and Dufftown Railway, affectionately known as “The Whisky Line,” is Scotland’s most northerly heritage railway, running 11 miles through Speyside, the heart of Scotland’s whisky country. The railway connects the towns of Dufftown, the “Malt Whisky Capital of the World,” with Keith, passing through spectacular Highland scenery.

The line passes within sight of seven distilleries and runs alongside the River Isla through beautiful countryside. Dufftown alone is home to nine whisky distilleries, making this railway journey a must for whisky enthusiasts. The railway operates vintage diesel railcars and heritage diesel locomotives, providing an authentic 1950s-60s railway experience.

Special whisky-themed trains and distillery tour packages are available, combining rail travel with Scotland’s famous whisky heritage. The railway also serves as a vital community link in this rural area.
