Ribble Steam Railway

Britain's urban heritage railway

Region: North Type: Standard Gauge Era: Victorian

The Ribble Steam Railway is a unique urban heritage railway running through the heart of Preston in Lancashire. Unlike most heritage railways in rural locations, the RSR offers a 1.5-mile journey through the historic Preston Docks and city center, crossing the Navigation Way on a working swing bridge.

The railway provides an authentic glimpse into Britain’s industrial railway heritage, with vintage industrial steam and diesel locomotives hauling passenger trains along the original dock railway tracks. The journey passes through fascinating industrial archaeology and offers a unique perspective on Preston’s maritime and railway history.

Operating from the Preston Riverside station, the railway runs regular services and hosts special events. It’s one of the most accessible heritage railways in the UK, being in the heart of a major town with excellent public transport links.
